Crotone stands on the Ionian coast of Calabria, where the land stretches out eastwards with the promontory of Capo Colonna. It is the Kroton founded by the Achaeans at the end of the eighth century BC, the city where Pythagoras opened his school and the home of Milo, the wrestler who won at Olympia. Of the Greek city little can be seen in the centre: the old town is a hill enclosed by sixteenth century walls, with the Castello di Carlo V, the castle of Charles V, on top, built partly with the stones of the temple of Hera, and the old harbour below. Around it is a modern city of apartment blocks and seafronts, with piazza Pitagora in the middle. The Greek world is about ten kilometres away, at Capo Colonna, where of the great sanctuary of Hera Lacinia a single column is still standing: it is the experience on this page. In winter Crotone is mild, a city that lives all year round and not only in summer, and from here you go to the fortress of Le Castella on its islet, to Santa Severina on its crag and into the vineyards of Cirò. In May comes the feast that holds everything together: on the night before the third Sunday the city accompanies the Madonna di Capo Colonna on foot as far as the promontory. With a motorhome, though, there is no municipal area: in the city there are the harbour car parks, and the areas with services open in winter are private, on the beach to the north and at Le Castella.

Sleeping

Stops and overnight stays

Crotone has no municipal motorhome area. In the city you stay in the harbour car parks, free, good for visiting the centre and less so for the night; the areas with services open in winter too are private, on the beach of Gabella to the north and at Le Castella to the south-west. Capo Colonna has a campsite.

Parcheggio del porto davanti alla Capitaneria

via Miscello da Ripe, 88900 Crotone (KR)

the large harbour car park in front of the Capitaneria, the harbour master's office, the one most used by people arriving by motorhome: the castle and the old town are about ten minutes away on foot. No known sign bans overnight stays, and between October 2025 and February 2026 travellers slept there undisturbed, with the Coast Guard next door. Fine for the day, for the night with caution

a wide open space between the harbour and the city, where long motorhomes fit too, separated from the harbour by a wall. On Thursday mornings there is the market and the car park fills up. It is poorly kept, and travellers disagree about the night: some found it quiet, others heard the ships' engines and the traffic

Area sosta camper Cogobay

via delle Conchiglie 7, 88900 Crotone (KR)

a private area inside a beach establishment on the sandy beach of Gabella, north of the city, with electricity and water at the pitch. In winter it is open, almost empty and with the bar closed; travellers write that out of season the toilets, in containers, are cold and poorly kept and the hot water runs out quickly. The operator had announced new facilities for spring 2026, but in October 2026 travellers still found them poorly kept. There are no buses: for Crotone there is the operator's shuttle, or half an hour by bicycle

In winter it is open, and travellers who were there in January and February speak of peace and of electricity that holds up even in a thunderstorm. The toilets are old but clean, and hot showers are included; you can buy vegetables, wine and oil, the baker comes by in the morning, and in summer the operator drives you to the supermarket. Getting around

Getting around

The old town and the harbour can be explored on foot, and the seafront is a long walk. For Capo Colonna there is a bus only on weekdays, and the coast as far as Le Castella is done by motorhome.

  • You arrive by the SS106 Jonica state road, from the north, from Sibari and Cirò Marina, or from the south, from Catanzaro: there are no motorways. The Gabella areas lie between the state road and the sea, north of the city; Capo Colonna is to the south-east, along the coast
  • The seafront is a limited traffic zone at weekends, on the stretches of viale Cristoforo Colombo and viale Gramsci: from 16 September to 1 November 2026 on Saturdays from 15:00 to midnight and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 to 20:00. For the winter the Comune has written nothing
  • The blue bays are run for the Comune by the company Park It, which does not publish its rates: in the car park in corso Mazzini, which admits motorhomes up to six metres, travellers paid 1 euro an hour or 5 euros a day in January 2024
  • The Thursday market fills the open space in via Miscello da Ripe; on the first Thursday of the month there is also the one in viale Regina Margherita, which that day is closed to cars
  • For Capo Colonna there is urban line 13 of Romano Autolinee, only on weekdays: with the 2026 winter timetable it left the terminus in via Giuseppe Di Vittorio at 6:15, at 11:00, in the early afternoon and at 19:00, and came back from Capo Colonna at 6:35, at 11:35, at 15:10 and at 19:35. It does not run on Sundays
  • The station is a couple of kilometres from the centre, on the line between Sibari and Catanzaro Lido; in 2026 there were works on the line with buses replacing trains, and before setting off check the Trenitalia notice
  • The airport, Sant'Anna, is about ten kilometres away, in the municipality of Isola di Capo Rizzuto
  • Water is not easy in the city: the drinking fountains in via Giuseppe Di Vittorio, where people fill their jerrycans, are almost always out of order, and there is no public motorhome service point. Filling and emptying are done in the private areas

Seeing

Sights

The centre takes a day: in the morning the castle, which in the afternoon opens only on Sundays, then the old town, piazza Pitagora and in the evening the seafront. Another half day goes to Capo Colonna, and around about there are Le Castella, Santa Severina and the vineyards of Cirò. Tap a marker on the map to open its entry below.

Castello di Carlo V

Castle · paid entry · 39.08187, 17.13226

piazza Castello 33, 88900 Crotone (KR)

the castle stands on the acropolis of the Greek city, above the old harbour. According to Wikipedia it is first mentioned in a deed of 1192, was remodelled by the Aragonese from 1484 and rebuilt from 1541 on the orders of Charles V, by the viceroy don Pedro de Toledo, to a design by Gian Giacomo dell'Acaya; to build it, stones were taken from the sanctuary of Hera at Capo Colonna too. What remains are the two cylindrical towers, the Comandante and the Aiutante, the bastions and the moat, which is now a garden; the Torre Marchesana was demolished after a collapse in the nineteenth century. The Comune calls it one of the largest fortresses in Italy, over fourteen thousand square metres. You enter by the stone bridge over the moat; inside there are the municipal library, the sixteenth century cannons next to the Torre Comandante and a collection of medieval finds. It is kept open by the volunteers of an association, and the operator warns that the opening hours may change. It is open in the morning, and on Sundays in the evening too: start here

From here Giovan Dionigi Galeni was kidnapped, who became the Turkish admiral Uluç Ali, and the village square is called Uccialì. All around is the Capo Rizzuto marine protected area, which according to Wikipedia, with almost fifteen thousand hectares of sea, is the largest in Italy. Events

Crotone's year has its centre in May, when the city accompanies the Madonna di Capo Colonna to the promontory through the night. In winter there are Christmas in the centre and the sailing carnival, in spring Good Friday, in October San Dionigi, the patron saint. The dates of the religious feasts come out in the local papers a few weeks before.

Night pilgrimage to the Madonna di Capo Colonna

the night between the Saturday and the third Sunday of May

the feast of the city and of the diocese. From the end of April the painting of the Madonna comes down from the altar and throughout May there are masses and rosaries; on the Saturday night the city sets off on foot, at about half past one, greeted by blank shots, and walks through the centre, along the seafront and the coast road to the sanctuary of Capo Colonna, twelve kilometres, where it arrives in the morning, at about seven, with the first mass. Thousands of people, many barefoot. In normal years a copy of the painting goes out, and on Sunday evening it returns to the city from the sea, on a patrol boat, with fireworks. Every seven years there is the Settennale: the original painting goes out and the return is made on a cart drawn by oxen; the last was in 2026, the next falls in 2033. In 2026 the pilgrimage was on the night between 16 and 17 May. That night the Capo Colonna road is closed to traffic: the motorhome stays in the city, or you go to the promontory before the road closes

With the castle on the water it is the most beautiful feast to see on this coast

Remember

Useful tips

  • In winter you sleep outside the city: the areas with services open all year are the private ones at Gabella, seven and nine kilometres to the north, and at Le Castella, twenty kilometres to the south-west; you come into the city by day and leave the motorhome in the harbour car parks
  • Phone before you stop: the Campeggio Alfieri, on 0962 934047, to find out whether it is open in winter, and the Gabella area, on 331 494 2446, if your motorhome is long, to find out which way to arrive
  • The castle is open in the morning, on Sundays in the evening too, and it is closed on Mondays, like Capo Colonna, Le Castella and the castle of Santa Severina: Monday is the day for the seafront
  • The Museo Archeologico Nazionale reopens on 7 January 2027, the operator says: until then the Treasure of Hera cannot be seen, while the park and the museum at Capo Colonna are open. Before going in January, check that the works really are finished
  • The cathedral is closed: the painting of the Madonna di Capo Colonna is in the church of the Immacolata, a hundred metres away
  • For the May pilgrimage leave the motorhome in the city: at night the Capo Colonna road is closed, and anyone who wants to see the arrival in the morning goes to the promontory before the road closes, and waits. The programme comes out at the end of April in the Crotone papers
  • In the recipe the oil, the chilli, the parsley and the bread have no quantity, the salt and the water to thin the sauce are not there, and the cooking time is missing, because the source does not give them: it depends on the size of the fish. The photograph is not the quadaro but a cacciucco from Livorno, a sister soup, with gurnard and mantis shrimp in an earthenware pan

and then?

What to do, what to taste, and where to go tomorrow.

Experiences from here

What we did starting from here, ordered by driving time.

Taste

Crotone is a land of sheep and of fish. The cheese is pecorino crotonese PDO, made from whole sheep's milk, fresh, semi-hard or aged, with the mark of the basket on the rind; the wine is Cirò, red and rosé from Gaglioppo and white from Greco, and the oil is Alto Crotonese PDO, from the Carolea olive. On the coast to the north they make sardella, tiny fish pounded with chilli and wild fennel, which in Crucoli has had a festival since 1970; since 2010 the fry may no longer be fished, and today it is often made with other fish. At the harbour you buy the fish for the quadaro, as the fishermen call the soup, after the cauldron it was cooked in: in a motorhome a large pot is enough.

Zuppa di pesce alla crotonese · ingredients for 4 people
  • 600 g fish: red mullet, scorpionfish, hake and gurnard
  • 500 g cuttlefish or squid
  • 500 g mussels and clams
  • 300 g prawns
  • 500 g peeled tomatoes
  • 1 onion
  • hot chilli
  • olive oil
  • plenty of parsley
  • croutons of country bread
Method
  1. make a spicy sauce with the peeled tomatoes, the chilli and the onion, and pour it into a large pot
  2. clean the fish well, scale it and wash it
  3. bring the sauce, which should be fairly thin, to the boil and add the fish a little at a time: first the cuttlefish and the squid, then the mussels and the clams, the prawns, the scorpionfish and the gurnard, and last of all the red mullet and the hake
  4. cook over a moderate heat, stirring carefully now and then
  5. pour the soup into a tureen, sprinkle it with coarsely chopped parsley and serve it piping hot with the croutons
