Marina di Ascea is the seaside part of Ascea, in the Cilento: a long sandy beach, low houses behind the seafront and the station of the Tyrrhenian railway line a stone's throw from the sea. The real village, Ascea, stands on the hill four kilometres away by road; it was born perhaps around the year 1000 and grew with the people who were leaving the coast and the malaria. But the coast had once been a city: north of the beach, on a headland that the sea no longer reaches, around 540 BC the Phocaeans founded Elea, the city of Parmenides and Zeno, which the Romans called Velia. The excavations have their own page; this one tells the rest. To the south the beach ends against the Punta del Telegrafo, with the sixteenth century tower on top and a path that climbs up to it above the sea. In summer it is a village of beach clubs and festivals; in winter it empties, a lot closes, and you come for Velia, which is open every day except Christmas Day and New Year's Day and costs less in winter, for walks along the coast and for the quiet. It has to be said straight away: in Marina di Ascea no stopover with services is known to be open in winter, and the nearest certain one is a campsite towards Palinuro.

Sleeping

Stops and overnight stays

The village has only one motorhome area, on the seafront, and those who have passed by in winter have almost always found it closed. The excavations of Velia have no car park of their own, and the campsites of the marina open in summer. Open all year, with the operator's price list, there is a campsite in Pisciotta, towards Palinuro: in winter, phone ahead.

the village's only motorhome area, fenced, on the seafront opposite a free public beach, a few hundred metres from the centre: level, with no shade, with electricity and water at the pitches, water filling and emptying, cassettes included, and hot showers. Whether there is a toilet the travellers do not agree. The operator has no website or phone number that can be found. A supermarket is just behind, the beach across the road. In summer the seafront funfair is next door, and in the evening you can hear it

The operator does not publish a price list; people who stopped there paid 20 euros a night in May 2023, 25 euros a day with electricity and hot showers in July 2023, 20 euros in May 2025 and 35 euros a night in August 2025; in winter, on 3 January 2023, 10 euros. the only stopover with services open all year to be found near Marina di Ascea, twelve and a half kilometres as the crow flies towards Palinuro, in the municipality of Pisciotta, with access from the SS18 state road. The pitches have electricity and water hook-ups and a drain, and the price list says they also apply to motorhomes just stopping over. From 1 November to 30 April the operator asks you to phone ahead. The bar stays open all year, and inside there is a small shop and a coin-operated washing machine. The sea is a hundred metres away. The pitch is available from 10:00 and must be left by 9:00 on the day of departure

The operator's price list, without a year: the pitch with electricity, water, hot showers and toilets costs from October to May 15 euros a night for two people, 7 euros for one from January to May and 8 from October to December, and 5 euros for each extra person; in June and September 20 euros for two, in July 30, in August 50. Arrival is between 14:00 and 20:00 and departure by noon; dogs are allowed. The owners take you to Ascea station, and the two pages that present it do not agree on whether the shuttle is paid. Getting around

Getting around

In Marina di Ascea you can leave the motorhome and do everything on foot, the village, the beach and the path of the Punta del Telegrafo; for the excavations of Velia, two and a half kilometres from the station, it is better to move it. Winter buses you can count on are nowhere to be found.

  • On the motorway, the Park writes, leave the A2 at Battipaglia and follow the signs for the archaeological area of Velia, which the satnav finds as "Parco archeologico di Velia". Which is the right exit on the main road no official source says: follow the signs for Velia
  • Ascea station is in Marina, on the Tyrrhenian line between Naples and Reggio Calabria: it has an automatic ticket machine, a waiting room, toilets and a bar. Until 12 December 2026 about twenty direct trains a day stop here for Salerno: regional trains take between an hour and an hour and a half, and almost all of them continue to Napoli Centrale, about two hours away; InterCity trains reach Salerno in about three quarters of an hour. Some regional trains do not run on Sundays and public holidays, and the timetable changes on 13 December
  • To the excavations of Velia it is two and a half kilometres from the station, the Park writes: go by motorhome, and leave it in piazzale Amedeo Maiuri or in via dei Medici Eleatici. On the first Sunday of the month there is a free Park shuttle between Paestum and Velia, for which the page gives no times
  • The buses: intercity lines leave from the station, but which ones and with what timetable in winter no official source says
  • Motorhomes and the village: some travellers write that in Marina di Ascea motorhomes may not drive around or stop outside the equipped area, in winter too, but the ordinance cannot be found on the Comune's website. Before stopping for the night outside an area, ask the municipal police, through the Comune's switchboard, 0974 977008
  • For Ascea, the upper village, the road climbs four kilometres up the hill; whether there are bans on motorhomes in the old village no source says

Seeing

Sights

One day for the excavations of Velia, which have their own page, and one for the rest: the morning on the seafront and on the path of the Punta del Telegrafo, the afternoon up the hill, in Ascea and Terradura. In winter go into Velia early, because between mid November and New Year the acropolis closes at 16:00. Tap a marker on the map to open its entry below.

the sandy beach that from here runs north as far as Casal Velino and the mouth of the Alento, and to the south ends against the rocks of the Punta del Telegrafo, where the high coast towards Pisciotta and Palinuro begins. The seafront is divided in two, the Lungomare Ponente towards Velia and the Lungomare Levante towards the point; behind it runs Corso Elea, the street of the festivals and the carnival, and in piazza Europa the Christmas village is set up in winter. Near the point some stretches of dune remain, protected by wooden fences, where the sea daffodil flowers. In winter the beach clubs are closed and the whole beach is free.

a stone's throw from the station, the palazzo of the Alario family, which the last heir, Gaetana Alario, left in 1986 to a foundation for Elea-Velia. It was restored by Paolo Portoghesi with Vittorio Gigliotti, and the work was finished in 1999: around it are the Cine-Teatro-Auditorium Parmenide, the Zenone arena, which is the open-air theatre, a travertine square with the portico of the Passeggiata dei Filosofi, the Philosophers' Walk, and in the garden the bronze statue of Parmenides by Vincenzo Cerino and the fountain of the Cinque Sorelle, the Five Sisters. Inside there is a library of more than twelve thousand volumes and a permanent exhibition on paradox, in the name of Zeno. In September the foundation brings together the scholars of Parmenides at Eleatica, and in summer the Zenone arena hosts the festival of ancient theatre. The Torre del Telegrafo and the Lovers' Path

Trail · free entry · 40.12512, 15.18153

località Punta del Telegrafo, 84046 Marina di Ascea (SA)

the path, which the Comune calls the Sentiero degli innamorati, the Lovers' Path, starts from the rocks at the end of the beach, in the locality of Punta del Telegrafo, and climbs the headland to a viewpoint above the tower; you come back the same way. The Comune gives 2.1 kilometres, without saying whether that is one way only, suitable for everyone, with wooden railings and signs; it is uphill, and one stretch is in steps. It was opened in July 2017. The tower is one of the sixteenth century watchtowers against the corsairs, with a square base and the shape of a truncated pyramid, and today it is a ruin; in front of it, in the sea, stands the rock of the Pietra di Nante. From the top you can see from Capo Palinuro to the mouth of the Alento, as far as Pioppi and Acciaroli, with the tower of Velia to the north. Among the rocks grows Genista cilentana, a broom found only around here, described on the Punta del Telegrafo itself in 1993. On 27 August the procession at sea of the Madonna di Portosalvo comes right up below the point.

the main village, on the hill at about 235 metres, four kilometres by road from the marina. It was born perhaps around the year 1000 and grew with the people who were leaving the acropolis of Velia, the medieval village of Castellammare della Bruca, to escape the malaria of the coast; it was a fief of the Sanseverino and then of the Maresca families. The mother church is San Nicola di Bari, the patron saint, and on 6 December the Comune holds the fair in front of the Town Hall, in via XXIV Maggio. The Comune does not publish a page on the historic centre, and no opening hours can be found for the churches and palazzi: you go up to look down over the plain and the headland of Velia, and for the December festivities.

When

Events

In winter Ascea's festivals are few and all in December: the patron saint on the 6th, the Christmas village in piazza Europa until January, the living nativity scene up on the hill; then carnival. At Velia nothing is scheduled in winter apart from the free Sundays. Summer, on the other hand, is full, with the fish festival, ancient theatre and the procession at sea in August. In mid October almost no event has its dates for the coming year yet.

Remember

Useful tips

  • In winter phone before you set off: the Parco Sfera area, the only one in the village, is usually closed, and the only stopover with services open all year is the Regina Villaggio Camping in Pisciotta, which from 1 November to 30 April wants a phone call. Anyone who wants to sleep near the excavations should first ask the municipal police whether it is allowed, because some travellers talk of a ban on motorhomes
  • At Velia in winter go in early: between 14 November and 31 December the acropolis, with the theatre and the tower, closes at 16:00, and to see everything the Park says to start by 15:00. Inside there is no bar and eating is not allowed: lunch is in the motorhome, before or after
  • The Velia ticket is also valid for three days for Paestum, the excavations and the museum, further north on the same coast: from December to February it costs 10 euros instead of 15
  • On the first Sunday of the month Velia is free, and on 4 November, 25 April and 2 June too; on 6 December 2026 that Sunday coincides with the San Nicola fair in the village
  • The path of the Punta del Telegrafo is short but uphill and stepped in places: wear walking shoes
  • What stays open in winter, among bars, bakeries and restaurants, no source says: it is best to arrive with a full pantry. There is a supermarket behind the Parco Sfera area, and the station has a bar
  • Naples is two hours away by regional train, from Ascea station, and has its own page; Salerno between three quarters of an hour and an hour and a half, depending on the train
  • Spaghetti with colatura is made with one pot and one small pan. Colatura and salted anchovies can be bought in Pisciotta, at the producer's shop in via Stazione Vecchia, but the winter opening hours are not written anywhere: phone, on 347 4439102. In the recipe there is a lot of oil, 100 ml for two, but that is what the source says

Taste

The Cilento is the land of the Mediterranean diet: the American researcher Ancel Keys lived here for part of the year, in Pioppi, on the coast further north, beyond Casal Velino, and today there is the museum that tells its story. From Ascea southwards, in Pisciotta, the next village, alici di menaica are still fished at night, with the net and the boat that bear the same name, and put straight under salt in terracotta jars: they are a Slow Food Presidium, they are fished in spring and summer, and in winter you buy them salted, in oil or as colatura, the anchovy extract. Ascea is within the area of the fico bianco del Cilento PDO, the white fig of the Cilento, which is dried in the sun after the late summer harvest and eaten all winter, plain or stuffed with walnuts and almonds. Among the cheeses, cacioricotta del Cilento, made from goat's milk, and mozzarella nella mortella, a cow's milk cheese shaped like a tongue and wrapped in myrtle leaves, which is eaten very fresh: both are made all year round, and in Casal Velino, the next village, there is one of the producers of cacioricotta. The small golden chickpeas are those of Cicerale. In a motorhome you make spaghetti with colatura di alici, in a quarter of an hour.

Spaghetti con la colatura di alici di menaica · ingredients for 2 people
  • 200 g bronze-drawn durum wheat semolina spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons colatura di alici di menaica
  • 100 ml extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 1 hot chilli pepper, if you like
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
Method
  1. cook the spaghetti in boiling water, salted much less than usual, because the colatura is already full of flavour
  2. meanwhile heat the oil in a small pan with the garlic and the chilli, until the garlic is golden
  3. drain the spaghetti al dente into a bowl, not into the pan, and sprinkle them with the parsley
  4. pour the boiling oil over them at once
  5. add the two tablespoons of colatura, stir and serve: the colatura must not be heated in the pan, because it loses its aroma
