Ravenna stands on the plain, eight kilometres from the Adriatic. It has been a capital three times: of the Western Roman Empire, from 402, of the Gothic kingdom of Theodoric, and of the Byzantine Exarchate, until 751. From those centuries eight monuments remain, which UNESCO put on the World Heritage List in 1996, with the most famous mosaics in the world: brick outside, gold inside, and the starry sky of Galla Placidia; they are an experience on this page. Dante spent his last years here, and died here in 1321: his tomb is behind the basilica of San Francesco, in the zona del silenzio, the zone of silence, and every evening at six someone reads a canto of the Comedy. The centre is small and flat, and you get round it on foot or by bicycle, with the Venetians' piazza del Popolo and its cafés. To the south, at Classe, was the harbour of the Roman fleet: today there is the basilica of Sant'Apollinare with its round bell tower, in the middle of the fields, and beyond it the pine forest that Dante remembers in Purgatory. Towards the sea there are the beach resorts, and at Cervia the salt pans with the flamingos. With a motorhome there is a municipal area with toilets, in piazza della Resistenza, open all year a quarter of an hour on foot from the mosaics.

Sleeping

Stops and overnight stays

In the city there are two places for motorhomes with water filling and emptying: piazza della Resistenza, paying, a kilometre from the centre, open all year with toilets, and piazza Fratelli Minardi, free, near the Mausoleum of Theodoric. At Classe there is a car park for motorhomes next to the basilica. At the beach resorts the Comune has the area at Marina di Ravenna and the Pro Loco, the local tourist association, the one at Porto Corsini; at Cervia the Comune's areas are free. In winter the safe place with services is piazza della Resistenza.

Area camper di piazza della Resistenza

piazza della Resistenza, 48121 Ravenna (RA)

the Comune's area west of the centre, in the big coach car park, with the motorhome section marked and stays of up to 48 hours; since 2 March 2026 you pay as written above, at the meter or with the app, and the older accounts with low prices no longer apply. San Vitale and piazza del Popolo are a kilometre away, a quarter of an hour on foot, with the cycle path, and it is the place that the Diocese itself recommends for the tour of the mosaics. Between September and October 2026 travellers describe quiet nights until the rubbish lorry at six, and the places full by 18:00 even in low season. The waste dump is a single grate, in the coach car park, and in past years some people found it blocked. In 2026 there is a new toilet block; whether it has showers, the accounts disagree. In winter you can stay, from November to January, and the toilets were open during the day. On Monday and Thursday afternoons there is the farmers' market, and the square is busier

Getting around

Getting around

The centre of Ravenna is small and flat: you get round it on foot or by bicycle, and the motorhome stays in piazza della Resistenza or in piazza Fratelli Minardi. To Classe you go by bus or by motorhome, to the beach resorts and to Cervia by motorhome.

  • You arrive by the A14 motorway, with the Ravenna spur, which branches off between Imola and Faenza; on the spur winter tyres or chains on board are compulsory from 15 November to 15 April. From Rome and from Cesena you arrive by the E45, along the coast by the Adriatica state road, from Venice and from Comacchio by the Romea
  • The ZTL, the limited traffic zone: the centre has cameras, switched on at all hours in via di Roma, via Cavour and other streets, and from 7:30 to 20:30 in others still. The permit for tourists is valid only below 5 tonnes, and a motorhome has no reason to go in
  • The anti-smog bans: from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 the measures of the regional air plan apply, which in the large towns of the plain stop the oldest diesels on weekdays, and on days of emergency measures Euro 5 too. We have not read Ravenna's ordinance, with the hours and the streets excluded: check it on the Arpae website, on the Comune's page, before arriving
  • On foot and by bicycle: from piazza della Resistenza to San Vitale and to piazza del Popolo it is a kilometre, with the cycle path
  • The bus for Classe is the 4, from the station; at Classe there is also a railway station, on the line to Rimini, 650 metres from the basilica. Bus 5 stops at piazza Fratelli Minardi
  • The market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings is between via Sighinolfi and piazza Zaccagnini, near the stadium, according to the Comune in 2020; the farmers' market on Monday and Thursday afternoons is in piazza della Resistenza, where the motorhomes are
  • Water and LPG: water filling and emptying are done in piazza della Resistenza and in piazza Fratelli Minardi, free. LPG is available at the Eni station at viale Europa 21, at the Darsena, open day and night, and at the Q8 in via Classicana, on the road to Classe

Remember

Useful tips

  • Get to piazza della Resistenza early: even in October the places were full by 18:00. If it is full, there is the free area in piazza Fratelli Minardi, near Theodoric
  • The mosaics are booked: Galla Placidia and the Neonian Baptistery need a time slot, and in winter the Diocese monuments close at 17:00. The mosaics experience gives the tickets and the walk from the motorhome area
  • On the first Sunday of the month the State monuments, Theodoric, the Arians and Classe, are free; those of the Diocese are not
  • At six in the evening at Dante's tomb a canto of the Comedy is read: you can book to read, a child too
  • For the flamingos go to Cervia, to the salt pans, on the guided tour; in winter phone first, because the tours for those months are not published
  • On the A14 spur, from 15 November to 15 April, you need winter tyres or chains on board, and in winter fog on the plain is not rare
  • In the recipe the source does not say how much broth is needed, how much salt and how much nutmeg, nor the cooking time; many families add lemon zest, which the source does not mention

Ravenna · part two

and then?

What to do, what to taste, and where to go tomorrow.

Experiences from here

Taste

In Ravenna you eat piadina, the Romagna flatbread, thicker here than in Rimini, cooked in kiosks and filled with squacquerone, the soft fresh cheese of Romagna, with rocket. In winter, on Sundays and at Christmas, there are cheese cappelletti, small filled pasta, in capon broth, and passatelli, made of breadcrumbs, cheese and eggs pressed through the iron straight over the broth. From Cervia comes the sweet salt, which is a Slow Food Presidium, and the wines are Sangiovese, Albana from the hills of Faenza and Burson, the red of Bagnacavallo. For passatelli in a motorhome you do not need the iron: a potato ricer is enough.

Passatelli in brodo · ingredients for 6 people
  • 150 g breadcrumbs from plain bread
  • 150 g grated parmesan
  • 4 eggs
  • nutmeg
  • meat broth
  • a couple of tablespoons of flour, if needed
Method
  1. knead the breadcrumbs with the parmesan, the eggs and the nutmeg into a firm dough, neither too soft nor too hard
  2. cover it and leave it to rest for about half an hour
  3. press the dough through the passatelli iron, or through a potato ricer with large holes
  4. cut the passatelli between 4 and 8 centimetres long and spread them on a tray lined with paper; if they fall apart, add a couple of tablespoons of flour to the dough
  5. cook them in boiling broth and lift them out with a slotted spoon when they begin to rise, before they come fully to the surface
  6. serve them at once, with a little broth
