Conegliano stands where the plain of Treviso meets the first hills, between the Piave and the Prealps, and its centre is a single street: the Contrada Granda, under the arcades, with its painted facades, the Duomo hidden behind the frescoed loggia of the Scuola dei Battuti and, in the presbytery, the great altarpiece that Cima da Conegliano painted in 1493. Cima was born here, his house can be visited behind the Duomo, and in the background of his paintings there are often the hill and the walls of the city. Above the Contrada a stepped lane climbs up to the castle, on the hill of Giano: a tower remains, which houses the city museum and has a terrace at the top from which you see from the mountains to the sea. But Conegliano is above all the gateway to the Prosecco hills, which run as far as Valdobbiadene and have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019, and it was here, in 1876, that the Scuola Enologica, the school of winemaking, was founded, the first in Italy. In spring the hills turn green, in the meadows people pick bruscandoli and wild greens, and the villages open their wine fairs. To the north, half an hour's drive away, are Vittorio Veneto, with the Venetian village of Serravalle and the museum of the Great War, the lakes of Revine with the pile dwellings of the Livelet, the abbey of Follina, the castle of Cison, the Molinetto della Croda and the Caglieron caves: a weekend with children fills up without effort.

Stops and overnight stays

In Conegliano there is no motorhome area run by the Comune: there is the one of the Campeggio Club, an association of motorhome owners, inside a fenced storage yard a quarter of an hour on foot from the centre, open all year. The nearest free service point is at Vittorio Veneto, and towards the Prealps, on the lakes of Revine, there are two campsites: one open all year, the other from April to September.

According to the Region's portal you can enter from 8:30 to 20:30. The gate is closed: on arrival you phone the club's number, and the person in charge arrives in a few minutes, registers you and gives you the city map. There is one toilet and one shower. Next door there is a supermarket and a park with a playground, and five minutes away a pizzeria; piazza Cima and the station are a quarter of an hour on foot. Travellers in 2025 and 2026 praise the volunteers and the security, and find the bays narrow and noisy: the road passes alongside, and at dawn the supermarket lorries arrive

Getting around

Getting around

The centre of Conegliano is small and you go round it on foot, from the station to piazza Cima and up to the castle; the motorhome stays at the Campeggio Club area. From 1 October to 30 April, on weekdays, the anti-smog bans apply in the whole municipality, and only the state roads and a few other roads stay open.

  • You arrive by the A27 motorway from Venice to Belluno, exit Conegliano, or by the A28 from Portogruaro and Pordenone, which ends at Conegliano. Two state roads enter the city: the Pontebbana, which here is called viale Venezia and viale Italia, and the Alemagna, which climbs towards Vittorio Veneto and Cortina. The Campeggio Club area is two hundred metres from viale Italia
  • The anti-smog bans, from the Comune's ordinance of 2 October 2026: from 1 October 2026 to 30 April 2027, except from 20 December to 6 January, Monday to Friday from 8:30 to 19:30, in the whole territory of the municipality diesels up to Euro 4 and Euro 0 and Euro 1 petrol vehicles may not circulate. When ARPAV, the regional environment agency, declares the orange or red alert, after four or ten days of fine particulates above the limit, the ban applies every day, Saturdays and Sundays included, and Euro 5 diesels and Euro 2 petrol vehicles stop too. Viale Italia and viale Venezia, via Menarè (the Alemagna), via Innocenti and via Matteotti as far as San Vendemiano always stay open. Vehicles with foreign plates driven by people who live abroad are not affected, and guests of accommodation with a booking in hand may drive along the road that leads there. Anyone who breaks the ban pays the fine of the highway code, and the second time in two years loses their licence for fifteen to thirty days
  • You climb to the castle on foot, from the Contrada by the lane of the Madonna della Neve or by the calle degli Asini: the motorhome has no reason to go up the hill
  • The buses, urban and out of town, are run by Mobilità di Marca (MOM); in the city lines 41 to 45 run, with different timetables on school days
  • The train: the station, in viale Carducci, is a quarter of an hour on foot from the motorhome area, on the Venice to Udine line, which passes through Treviso, and on the one for Belluno and Calalzo, which stops at Vittorio Veneto. In front of the station, in the Pagoda at viale Carducci 20, is the IAT tourist office
  • LPG: the San Marco Petroli in viale Venezia, on the Pontebbana towards Treviso, and the Enercoop in via San Giuseppe, near the motorhome area; at Vittorio Veneto the Eni at the service point
  • For the surroundings: the Strada del Prosecco, the Prosecco wine road, starts from Conegliano and heads west through the hills to Valdobbiadene, about twenty kilometres away as the crow flies, passing San Pietro di Feletto and Refrontolo, where the Molinetto della Croda is; Susegana and the castle of San Salvatore lie to the south-west, on the Pontebbana; Vittorio Veneto to the north, on the Alemagna; the lakes of Revine, Cison di Valmarino and the abbey of Follina to the north-west, at the foot of the Prealps, by way of Tarzo or Pieve di Soligo

Seeing

Sights

The city takes half a day on foot: you climb to the castle, come down by the lane of the Madonna della Neve and walk along the Contrada Granda to Porta Monticano. Several things open only at weekends: the Sala dei Battuti and Cima's house on Saturdays and Sundays, the little church of the Madonna della Neve on Sunday afternoons. Outside the city you head north, away from the wine road: Vittorio Veneto, the Vallata with the lakes and Follina, Fregona. The Livelet opens to the public only on Sundays and public holidays from April to early November, CastelBrando can be visited with a guide on Sundays, and the castle of San Salvatore has no visiting hours. The facade on the street was painted at the end of the sixteenth century by Ludovico Pozzoserrato. After Napoleon the hall became a prison, in 1807, and then a shelter for soldiers, and it was restored only in the 1960s. piazza Giovanni Paolo I, 31029 Vittorio Veneto (TV)

at Ceneda, the southern part of Vittorio Veneto, twelve kilometres from Conegliano, in the sixteenth century palace of the Comunità. It is the museum of the battle fought from 24 October to 3 November 1918, which gave the city its name; it grew out of the collection of Luigi Marson, one of the "ragazzi del '99", the boys born in 1899 who were sent to the front, opened on 2 November 1938 and was redone between 2012 and 2014. On the ground floor you walk inside a reconstructed trench, narrow and winding; on the first floor life under the occupation, between November 1917 and October 1918, with Marson's armoury; at the top the final battle. On the square is the eighteenth century cathedral of Ceneda, with the fountain of 1555 and the monument to John Paul I, Albino Luciani, who was bishop here from 1958 to 1969

The Caglieron caves, at Fregona

Waterfall · paid entry · 46.00851, 12.33020

via Grotte del Caglieron, 31010 Fregona (TV)

a gorge carved by the Caglieron stream, with waterfalls about ten metres high and caves, partly natural and partly sandstone quarries, the "piera dolza", the soft stone, dug from the sixteenth century with the columns left slanting to hold up the vault. The walk is a loop of about a kilometre, an hour, on wooden walkways, steps and slopes, damp and slippery even in summer: no pushchairs, a baby carrier backpack is better, and shoes with grip. Dogs are allowed on a short lead. At the end the little mill and the stonecutter's hamlet; at the entrance the bar, the visitor centre and picnic tables along the stream. The car parks near the entrance are paid, and for motorhomes they cost 3 euros an hour; the free ones are at Piai, 700 metres away. From Conegliano it is eighteen kilometres

Opening hours according to the Pro Loco of Fregona, which runs the park, open all year; from 1 October 2026 you enter from 9:30, with last entry at 16:30 on weekdays and on the days before public holidays and at 17:00 on public holidays. No booking, except for groups of more than twenty people · 4 euros, free for children up to and including 12 · 328 8117359 · visitfregona.it · caglieron@visitfregona.it

Events

In Conegliano spring belongs to wine: from March to June the villages of the hills take turns to open their fairs, and one is at Ogliano, a hamlet of the city. In odd years, in June, piazza Cima becomes a draughts board for the Dama Vivente, the living draughts game. Summer brings crafts to Cison di Valmarino and wines to the castle, autumn spit-roast meat and chestnuts, and winter the Christmas village in the square and the big exhibition at Palazzo Sarcinelli.

Remember

Useful tips

  • The anti-smog bans stop diesel motorhomes up to Euro 4 Monday to Friday, from 8:30 to 19:30, until 30 April 2027, in the whole municipality except the state roads and a few other roads; during the Christmas holidays, from 20 December to 6 January, they do not apply. With the orange or red alert they apply every day and to Euro 5 vehicles too: check the ARPAV bulletin the day before you arrive
  • Phone the Campeggio Club area first, because the gate is closed and there are about fifteen bays; for the Primavera del Prosecco and for the weekends in December it is best to call a few days ahead
  • In spring the campsites on the lakes are the base for the hills: the Lago di Lago opens on 1 April, Riva d'Oro is open all year, and the free service point at Vittorio Veneto is on the way
  • The wine fairs are in the evening: on weekdays they open at around 18:30 or 19:00, and at lunchtime they usually open only at weekends
  • Many things open only at weekends: the Sala dei Battuti and Cima's house on Saturdays and Sundays, the little church of the Madonna della Neve on Sunday afternoons, the Museo del Cenedese from Friday, the Livelet on Sundays from April to early November, CastelBrando on Sundays with a guide. A Saturday and Sunday in spring are the right time
  • With children: the terrace at the top of the castle tower, the Livelet with the pile dwellings and the workshops, the trench in the Museo della Battaglia, the walkways of the Caglieron caves (without a pushchair), the ride round the lakes of Revine by bicycle
  • In the recipe the source does not say how much stock is needed, how long the rice cooks or how much Prosecco goes into the second part of the cooking: taste the rice

Experiences from here

What we did starting from here, ordered by driving time.

Taste

Conegliano drinks Prosecco: Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore DOCG, made from the glera grape on the hills between here and Valdobbiadene, with the Rive, the grapes from the steepest vineyards of a single village, and at the top Cartizze, 107 hectares on the hills of Valdobbiadene. Towards the Cansiglio, at Fregona, Sarmede and Cappella Maggiore, they make Torchiato di Fregona, a sweet wine from glera, verdiso and boschera, with the grapes left to dry for a long time on racks and the wine at least two years in small casks. At table the Marca trevigiana, the province of Treviso, serves the spiedo of the hill osterie, meat on the spit turned for hours in front of the fire, radicchio rosso di Treviso, sopa coada, a baked soup of pigeon and bread, the cheeses, from fresh Casatella trevigiana to Montasio, mushrooms and in autumn the chestnuts of Combai; and tiramisù. But the season to look for here is spring, when wild greens are picked in the meadows and along the hedges: bruscandoli, the shoots of wild hops, for risotto and omelette, sparasine, wild asparagus, s'ciopet, the bladder campion, and radicèle, the dandelion, and on the plain the white asparagus of Cimadolmo arrives. The greens are eaten in the trattorias: picking them yourself means knowing how to recognise them.
